Rig Positioning Services

Back in 1966, the "Ocean Traveller" undertook the boring of the first exploration well in the Norwegian Sector of the North Sea. Since this time Fugro Survey AS has being a leading player in the positioning of mobile drilling rigs, both semi-submersible an jack-up.

Every year we are involved in up to 100 rig move operations in Norway from the Danish border in the south to the icy conditions of the Berrents Sea in the North. These operations extend from positioning a semi-submersible drilling rig in open waters to complicated anchoring amongst pipelines and platforms and the positioning of jack-up rigs a few decimetres form existing platforms.

Over the years we have developed an advanced package based on state of the art hardware and software to support these operations. Key elements of this package are:

  • Use of the Fugro Survey High Precision GNSS Systems.
  • Tracking Total Stations with VHF Telemetry to the Rig.
  • Dedicated anchor tug GPS based tracking system.

Central in all the rig positioning operations is the Fugro Survey Starfix.Seis software package. This is an in-house package developed by Fugro Survey. The key elements of this software are:

  • Interfacing to several hundred positioning systems and survey sensors.
  • Real time display of the rig and all it's anchor handling tugs.
  • Real time remote tracing displays for anchor tugs.
  • Integrated data logging for post processing and analysis.
  • Advanced anchor delpoyment fuctionality.
  • Advanced anchor catenary computations, including chains, wire, fibre rope, in line buoys and multiple touch down sections.
  • 3D Visualisation Graphics Displays.

Our key clients for rig positioning operations are the world's major oil companies.
